On a chilly Saturday morning, GWIS Research Triangle members, officers and friends convened at the Durham Branch of the Food Bank to spend 3 hours sorting through cans donated to the Food Bank during can day at the NC State Fair. That’s right, in case you were wondering where those cans end up – they were right there in front of us for sorting, checking and stacking into a separate box.
Officers Kony Chatterjee (President), Jordan Tabor (Secretary), Nyssa Tucker (Membership Secretary) and Rita Tejada Vaprio (Treasurer) were joined by chapter member Dawn Stancil and GWIS chapter friends Danica, Lauren and Masih.
Each year, thousands of cans are donated to The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina as a result of the Food Lion Hunger Relief Day at the North Carolina State Fair. GWIS volunteers aided in sorting and organizing these cans for transport to those suffering from food insecurity. GWIS members assisted in sorting and organizing a total of nine containers each consisting of ~1500 pounds worth of cans – it was a very productive day! Thank you to all of those who volunteered and to the Durham Branch of the Food Bank for giving us a great start to the weekend!
