Join GWIS at the Science Cafe: When Mice Are Men

Join fellow GWIS Research Triangle members for a discussion about sex equity in biomedical research at the Science Cafe: When Mice Are Men at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.

In medicine, men and women experience illness and respond to drugs differently, but scientists primarily study males when developing treatments for both sexes. University of North Carolina surgeon scientist Melina Kibbe, MD, will discuss sex equity throughout the biomedical research pipeline: from cell research to human clinical trials. Dr. Kibbe’s advocacy around this issue has resulted in policy changes from the National Institute of Health, the Government Accountability Organization, and the Food and Drug Administration.

Wikipedia Workshop

Join GWIS Research Triangle chapter member Beth Knight and her colleague Mary D’Rozario on Monday April 24, 2017 at 6 pm at the UNC Health Sciences Library (Rm 527) for an interactive workshop on using and editing Wikipedia pages. The workshop will provide instruction in creating an account, creating a page and editing a page. If interested, you can bring your own computer and practice editing with the help of our workshop leaders.

Women are underrepresented in Wikipedia posts, including in the science field, which is partially due to the fact that women are underrepresented as editors of Wikipedia. As Wikipedia is a major information source, the goal of this workshop is to provide the encouragement and the tools needed to empower female scientists to use this platform to increase the awareness of women’s impact in science and society.

Sign up to participate here! Please sign up by Monday April 17! No previous Wikipedia editing experience is required!

The UNC Health Sciences Library is located at 335 S. Columbia St., CB 7585, Chapel Hill, NC. For parking information and for a map, click here.
